Rosa Parks free essay sample
Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama February 4, 1913. She was an African American Civil Rights activist. She was also well known as ââ¬Å"the first lady of Civil Rights,â⬠and ââ¬Å"mother of the freedom movementâ⬠(Rosa parks biography, 2013). She is a well-known and respected as a woman, because of her inspirational, yet defensive action. Parks is famous for her refusal to obey the bus driver who demanded that she relinquish her seat to a white man. Mrs. Parks was charged with violation of the city code that dealt with segregation, though she technically did not violate the law (Makow, 2005)Although she acted alone with her action, her defiance began a movement that ended legal segregation in America. Her ensuing arrest and trial provoked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the most immense and successful widespread movements against racial segregation in history. Rosa Parks was raised in Pine Level, Alabama where segregation was very extreme. She walked to and from school every day (Rosa Parks Book). There were no school busses that went to either her home or the school (Rosa Parks Book). Mrs. Parks attended the Montgomery Industrial School for girls, Booker T Washington High School, and Alabama State College. With the support of Raymond, she was able to attend school again and obtain her high school diploma in 1933. She met and married Raymond Park in 1933 as her first and last mirage even after he passed. Rosa Parks had always carried herself as a hard believer knowing the wrong in segregation (The story behind, 2012). Though she was very tiresome of being mistreated, she always believed that she was just as good as any other, even the white people who treated her like anything less of a human. One afternoon, Rosa Parks paid her fare to go the Cleveland Avenue Bus in downtown Montgomery. She was on her way home from work, the Montgomery Fair department store, when she had just so happen to get on the bus with the same bus driver from thirteen years earlier, who had kicked her off the bus and left her in the rain (The story behind, 2012). She sat in an empty seat in the first row of back seats reserved for blacks in the ââ¬Å"coloredâ⬠section of the bus. It was near the middle of the bus and directly behind the ten seats reserved for white passengers only. As the bus driver proceeded on to the third stop, all of the reserved seats for the white passengers were full. When the bus arrived at the Empire theatre, several white passengers boarded and all the ââ¬Å"white-onlyâ⬠seats were taken. In the 1900ââ¬â¢s, the city of Montgomery, Alabama passed a city ordinance that allowed bus drivers to segregate their passengers by race. However, no passengers were to be required to give up their seat and stand if the bus was crowded and no other seats were available (Ogletree, 2006). Over some time, most bus drivers had adopted the implementation of demanding the black riders to relinquish their seats to the white passengers boarding the bus with no seats available. On December 1, 1955, when Rosa was 42 years old, she was arrested for not giving up her seat in the black section of the bus to a white man who had just boarded on the bus (Ogletree, 2006). The driver, Blake, noted that the front of the bus was filled with white passengers and there were two or three men standing, which moved the colored section sign behind Parks and demanded that four black people give up their seats in the middle section so that the white passengers could sit down. (Rosa parks biography, 2013). The bus consisted of about thirty six seats per bus: the front row were for ââ¬Å"whites only,â⬠the middle were for both, and the back seats were for blacks which came with a rear door that they had to enter and exit from. Parks only agreed to challenge the segregationist law in court after she consulted with her husband Raymond, her mother, and her attorney. She was arrested for taking her stand. The bus incident led to the formation of the Montgomery Improvement Association, which was led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Association called for a boycott of the city-owned bus company (Makow, 2005). The boycott lasted for about 382 days and it brought such an inspirational and mass attention to the world. An anonymous agreement was made that the ââ¬Å"coloredâ⬠people would boycott the bus until fair seating was arranged and that they would hire more African American men to be bus drivers as well. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks encouraged blacks and white of the same to find a wide range of nonviolent ways to protest the segregation issue (The story behind, 2012). The Montgomery Advertiser supported the boycott by helping spread the word out to many. Because seventy-five percent of the bus riders were ââ¬Å"colored,â⬠the boycott was such a successful and a significant movement that it ended segregation throughout Montgomery and other places around the United States as well (Rosa parks biography, 2013). After the boycott, Rosa Parks became such an iconic and leading spokesperson of the civil rights movement of the U. S. In 1987, Rosa distinguished the Institute for Self Development for young people. In 1992, she published her first book; Rosa Parks, My Story. Rosa Parks also continued to be active and involved in the civil rights struggle, giving speeches and attending marches even after all that has happened (Rosa parks biography, 2013). She had received much recognition, awards, and was honored many times for her outstanding movement. Her courage changed the lives of many and impacted the history of many generations significantly. On October 4, 2005, Rosa Parks passed at the age of ninety-two with such a very well respected and memorable funeral. After she passed, her casket was placed in the rotunda of the United States capitol for two days for the world to pay their respect (Rosa parks biography, 2013). She was the first and only woman, but the second African American to lie in the state capitol, which is an honor reserved presidents of the U. S. After the funeral, Parksââ¬â¢ casket was put on an antique, gold-trimmed, horse-drawn carriage for the seven-mile procession to the cemetery. Her body was to be entombed in a mausoleum along with those of her husband and mother. Rosa Parks was described as ââ¬Å"both a warrior and a woman of peace who never stopped working toward a future of racial equality; a woman and mother of freedom movement (The story behind, 2012). ââ¬

Learning to Finish the Race Essay Example For Students
Learning to Finish the Race Essay School is supposed to be a place of learning, growth and self-discovery, but for some students, it is not. When I was young, all I wanted was to be liked by people. Elementary days, thatââ¬â¢s when life made me realized that everyone hates me. My classmates would tease, bully, hurt and ignore me. They would usually say, ââ¬Å"you dont belong hereâ⬠, and there I am sitting alone at the corner of our room. I was deeply hurt, but never had I show them I am crying. Every time Im in pain I pretend to smile but honestly, deep down in my heart I am already crying and at the back of my mind I am also cursing them. It should have been fun going to school, you learn a lot of things and you acquire knowledge, but unfortunately, because of these people, I used to hate going to school. Every time our teacher would announce the Top 10 students of the class, I always pray that my name will be called but no. For almost six years that I have been into Elementary, all I know is hatred and anger, I believe that I canââ¬â¢t do anything, that I am too dull and idiot. When I stepped in high school, I thought there will be some changes about how people treat me, but unluckily, my classmates are bullying and discriminating me again. I was in the smart class, (honestly, even I, myself still cant believe that). Somehow, I did well in school. This is when I was able to be part of the Top 10 students of the class. It was also in high school that I realized that the clichà © ââ¬Å"if you have money, youââ¬â¢ll have a lot of friendsâ⬠is true. Before I go to school, I always see to it that I have a lots of money and food in my bag so that Iââ¬â¢ll have something to give to my classmates for them to like me and be friends with me. I had a lot of friends then, but they leave me when I already donââ¬â¢t have money to treat and food to give them. During our fourth year in high school, everyone has their goal, of where they would go to college and what would be their course, while me, I didnââ¬â¢t even know if I will pursue my college or not. The first reason why I am hesitant to continue college is because, people might bully, ignore, discriminate and hurt me again and the second reason is financial, where would my mom get the money for my tuition fees. After I have graduated high school, I enrolled in a school but I wasnââ¬â¢t able to finish it due to lack of financial. Every time I enter a college, I always end up dropping the course because of different problems, for almost 6 years, I was out of school. Then last 2011 I decided to pursue my college, and there, I was able to enrol in CSPC ââ¬â Naga which is now BISCAST. I took the BSEd course because that is what my relatives want, since they are the one who will pay for my tuition fees. I am not really good at school, I always got the lowest grade during examinations and quizzes just an under average student. Before I enter college, I already know how hard would it be, but still I decided to take the risk because I want to give my family a better way of living. It was so hard for me to cope up with my subjects considering that I was out of school for six years. College were not that easy for me, I had a lot of difficulties; I have to go to school even without breakfast, lunch and money, even I donââ¬â¢t have sleep at night because my addict cousin is trying to kill us, and even if I am not mentally and emotionally prepared. I must go to school because I promised my mom that Iââ¬â¢ll be someone someday and that she will never have to make night into day just to get money. I honestly donââ¬â¢t believe in myself, that Is why I am feeling so blessed because I passed the first, second and third year in college. .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 , .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .postImageUrl , .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 , .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105:hover , .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105:visited , .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105:active { border:0!important; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105:active , .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105 .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udf9caf65b13836b5cea497948db33105:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Economics Supply And Demand EssayI know I did my very best to pass those years even if I am already feeling down, but still I stood up. Now I am in my fourth year, hopefully my last year in college, but I am afraid this will not. I canââ¬â¢t concentrate in my school works, I am worried about my health and anxious about a lot of things. I really find it too difficult this year, the subjects and some of my professor. Lately, I am really feeling so down and upset with myself, I even thought of dropping all my subjects ââ¬â I am about to quit. But, when I am already starting to accept my failure thereââ¬â¢s this my conscience telling me that my mom is not getting any younger now, she might be weak in the near future, how will I give her a better way of living if I stop here. I have to fight until the finish line, if by any chance, I fail, I know to myself at least I tried. In life, sometimes we have to accept the reality but whatever happens you have to focus on your goal and finish it until the end. No matter how hard or difficult it maybe, you should not quit, because youââ¬â¢ll never know whatââ¬â¢s going to happen until you are there to experience it. Life is a race, letââ¬â¢s finish it!

Motorcycles Essays - Land Transport, Transport, Outdoor Recreation
Motorcycles In 1868 Ernest and Pierre Michaux of France, experimented with a steam-powered bicycle. This engine was to big and heavy to really do much other than be a good idea. In 1868, steam powered motors was all that they had. The idea of a motor-powered bicycle had not come around again until 1884 when the gas powered combustion engine was a fairly common thing. In 1884 a man from England named Edward Butler attached a motor to his son's tricycle. Then four months later he attached a larger motor to his own custom tricycle. Every one thought that this idea was the best. Well the news got out to a German named Gottlieb Daimler. Daimler thought that he had to make one of the machines. But Daimler's machine was different. Daimler's machine had an ordinary bicycle for a frame instead of a tricycle. Daimler finally got his motor bicycle completed in1886. Soon after Daimler had finished his bike he lost interest in two wheels and went on to pioneer the automobile. These three machines were the birth of motorcycle. The first really successful motorcycle was built in 1901. The people who built it were Michael and Eugene Werner. They adopted the classic style of motorcycle that is used today with the motor between your legs and underneath the gas tank. The word "motorcycle" wasn't really even used until the end of the twentieth century. Motorcycle meant and bicycle or tricycle with an engine. Some of the kinds of motorcycles were two-wheeled bikes, three-wheeled bikes, mini-bikes, mopeds, and motor scooters. The scooter was extremely popular in Italy. Motorcycle racing began in 1897. The first official race was in Richmond, Surrey, England. Most of the racing back then was either city-to-city or informal road races. Starting at about 1905 closed-circuit racing was big among racers. First of all it was easier. All you had to do was turn one way, and go around a track for a certain number of times. Pretty much all of these bikes were twin cylinder bikes with about a 35 cubic inch motor, or 433 cubic centimeters. This changed in 1904 when Harley-Davidson made their first bike. It had a 45 cubic inch (750 cubic centimeters) V-twin motor. Other people then soon adapted their bikes to have bigger engines. The exception to closed circuit racing is the Tourist Trophy race that originated on the Isle of Man in 1907. The Tourist Trophy was first set at 37 miles but was later changed to 38? miles. This race was the first sponsored race. It was sponsored by Triumph Bikes for a promotion. This marked a major mile stone for motorcycle racing. In the early 1900's if you wanted a motor cycle you either had to make one your self or have someone with a good mechanic background make one. If you wanted to buy one, it was really expensive. If you wanted to make one, it would take you a lot of time. This problem was solved in 1904. Two manufacturers, Harley-Davidson and Triumph, started to manufacture their bikes. These bikes were fairly expensive. There was a lot of labor to these bikes. They had to make each fit just right. Because of this reason they could only manufacture about 10 bikes a year. But the industry wanted, and needed these bikes. It was a cheaper way of traveling from place to place. Even when the automobile many people still had scooters or motorcycles because they were cheaper and easier to operate. Many people who wanted to deliver things from town to town, that didn't like the speed of a horse and buggy, bought these bikes. The bike became a major part in our lives. In 1913, the Chicago police department started to experiment with motorcycles. There were now half-a-dozen different companies in the U.S. and about a dozen internationally, including Norton, BSA, and Vincent. Motorcycles were becoming huge everywhere. Then the Great Depression came along and motorcycles were scarcer. Gas was hard to come by. The motorcycle was more commonly used than automobiles because they had way better gas mileage. Once the Great Depression only three American brands remained, Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Triumph. Motorcycles were now commonly used for racing or for pleasure. Cars became more popular because they had a longer season to be used. Bikes gradually evolved until 1958 when the first four-cylinder motorcycle was made. Many people were going away from the classic look and buying Asian bike like Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, and then later Yamaha. These bikes had a noticeably

Employees contribution in customer satisfaction, customer retention Dissertation
Employees contribution in customer satisfaction, customer retention and customer loyalty in SME retail organization like SUPERVA - Dissertation Example The peripheral economies have not been able to restructure their economies and introduce reforms to enhance productivity and competitiveness of their economies. 1.1.2 The Irish Economy The Irish economy has been one of the most successful in the world but it has also been among the hardest hit during the economic recession (European Commission, 2012). Up to 2007 Ireland experienced strong economic growth and the living standards in Ireland caught up with the world standards. This occurred as more number of workers entered the labor market. Additionally, higher levels of education resulted in better productivity. EU being declared as a single market made Ireland an attractive destination for inward investments. Between 2002 and 2007 the economy experienced high growth rates but this was at the cost of the Irish households building up personal debts. The real estate sector surged forward to due to increase in bank lending. Due to this, the balance sheets of banks grew disproportionatel y large compared to the size of the economy. In addition to the deposit base, the introduction of the Euro encouraged short-term borrowing from overseas. Risky lending practices by the banks proved to be damaging for the economy and this was evident when the property bubble burst (European Commission, 2012). Because of these anomalies the Irish banks were vulnerable to the global recession in 2007. The collapse of Lehman Brothers, investment bankers of US, led to severe tension in the global financial markets which led to deposit outflows at the Irish banks. 1.1.3 SME Retail sector in Ireland The retail sector in Ireland comprises of over 20,000 food and non-food retailers, mostly SMEs, being both Irish and International in origin (IBEC, 2012). The retail sector employs over 240,000 employees. Retailing offers people career in their own locality. The retail SMEs have invested heavily in the sector in the last decade. As a result of recession, the retail market has shrunk by over one -fifth in the terms of value. The retailers were forced to reduce prices, which in turn impacts the overall profits. However, the operating costs have not been affected due to inflexible rents, hourly pay rates, local authority charges and property service charges. The shrinking of the retail market compelled the retailers to seek help from the government. To enhance consumer spending, focus on employees has been considered a valuable agenda. This is based on the recommendation of Irish Business & Employers Confederation in its election manifesto ââ¬ËDelivering the Jobs Agendaââ¬â¢ (IBEC, 2012). 1.2 Competitive advantage through people Human resources are now considered valuable assets as there has been a rise in the status of knowledge workers (Sheehan, 2005). Based on the resource-based view of the firm, human capital has become the source of competitive advantage as Koch and McGrath (1996) contend that a highly productive workforce possess attributes that make it a highly v aluable strategic asset. This has led to the recognition of and commitment to human capital development; this has also caused the shift from traditional personnel management to refined HR practices. Competitive advantage can also be gained by recruiting people from diverse backgrounds regardless of ethnicity, age, gender and other individual characteristics (Dââ¬â¢Netto and Sohal, 1999). 1.3 Motivation for Research Retailing is intensely competitive in Ireland as anyone can open a store. This has brought in many new
